Fredric McCormick is new to Bell Street Gallery, Fred splits his time between Minneapolis, his cabin in Trego, WI and his family's summer cottage on Frenchman Bay, Maine. Fredric's impulse, "to draw things the way they really look," go back to the tender age of seven. Over the years he has worked in a number of media (oil, watercolor, acrylic and pencil) and has taken awards in a large number of national competitions.

New work from Michael Tonder

Michael Tonder – working with recycled plate glass, kilns, and sandblaster- creates one-of-a-kind glass sculptures. Handcut from flat sheets of glass, each creation is carefully assembled, than fired in an electric kiln. After firing, the fused glass forms are than carved and etched to completion.

Within each form, Mike employs internal lines, altered surface textures, and light reflection, refraction, and diffusion to create tension, stimulate curiosity, and engage the eye. His art reflects the many influeneces of his experience as a forester and park manager, and many excursions into Minnesota’s Boundary Waters canoe area.

Some of Martye's new work, she uses porcelain clay giving a clay a bonewhite look and than she fires them in a saw-dust kiln for the brown/black marks. You can see these and many others after the 29th of April.

Bell Street Gallery’s first season

We’re back to the time of the year where we review what we’ve done over the past season and make plans for 2010 season. It’s been an exciting year for Mary and I. We’ve enjoyed getting to know our year round neighbor’s seasonal guests. We are open for Fall Fest the weekend of October 16^th & 17^th with artists working at the gallery. The gallery is also open for the Holiday Boutique on Saturday November 28^th, from 11am – 5pm for your holiday shopping. So after visiting the Museum, please stop by and check out our specials on kids books, jewelry, and photos from this past season.

Working with our local artists, we’ve enjoyed success in selling paintings of Holly Marie Tourdot, Susan Dexter, Diane Marie and pottery and jewelry by Kristin Lein. Many participants enjoyed our summer kid’s classes. Madeline Island’s galleries co-sponsored The Gallery Crawl during July and August. We had a great time with live music, yummy food, and wine -- meeting all, enjoying local and regional music, and visiting with artists.

Now for next year, we’ve received a grant from the La Pointe Center for kid’s classes next summer. We will be working with the Rec Center offering kid’s art camp one morning per week in July and August. We are looking for visitors and local help in teaching these classes. Some of the artists that we are looking for are: basket weaver, tie-dye, water colorist and/or pastel artist, and ? We will be holding these classes in our backyard in our new larger tent. We will also be holding one additional kids class each week, so we are doubling our Arts out reach for kids next year. We are also looking for teacher(s) to help with these classes and anyone interested should email an résumé to steve@bellstgallery.com. Kids classes are being added to our calendar for next summer already and be found on our website and at www.madelineislandart.org.

We are adding more local artists to our mix with the paintings of Katherine Parfet and Terrie Myers. Additional news of artists will be posted throughout the winter on our website: www.bellstgallery.com that is being rebuilt at this time. Check out the blog for photos and stories from this past season to relive the summer.

We welcomed in the summer with a mixture of classical music provided by the Madeline Island Music Camp and the rock group of "legfingers". Music ran till 10:30 with about 150 visitors to the gallery enjoying the warm weather, 85 degrees when the String Quartet started.

Bell Street Gallery hosted our glass artists Jennifer Ionta and Julie Nordine this weekend. They showed the making of the jewels of their creations, shaping and blending the glass to create ear rings, jewelry and lampwork beads.

Bell Street Gallery Opening get-to-gether

Friday night we had an opening party for the folks that have made the gallery possible. The town of LaPointe and Madeline Island. We guests included artists from the Island to the construction works that finished the deck 45 minutes before the party started.

The time working with the building guys gave me an idea on how to cut the cake for the opening, with a saw-all.

Although the temp dropped about 20 degrees outside during the party and the winds and rain of Lake Superior drove us indoors, great food and visiting was had by all.

We are looking forward to a wonder season on Madeline and will be adding images on a weekly basis and when new work comes to the Gallery.

The concrete arrives...

The concrete has arrived... sounds like no big deal, but the weight restrictions for the roads were lifted today, and that meant that we could finally get the concrete needed for the 32 footings for the deck (this deck will never blow away, and can be used for a bomb shelter).

The Mermaid arrives....

Saturday, Chris Kibane delivered his sculptures to the gallery. They included the piece we will be installing at the front entrance. She's a 10' steel mermaid who will greet visitors to the gallery (until we sell her) along with our new sign for the front entrance. He and his wife Linda also dropped off two critters and a couple of other pieces you have to see to believe.

As we worked around the gallery, I am amazed at the wonderful variety of work we have collected for this first year.

It's Spring on the Island, maybe 67 degrees and sunny... Tom's is opening tomorrow and he's got Beer in the cooler.

Artist Statement:

Steve has been working as a commercial photographer for the past 30 years based out of Minneapolis. His work has been broad in experiences from shooting motorcycles in Monument Valley, AZ. to aircraft in Tokyo, Japan and snowmobiles in Idaho and boats in Texas. Always focused on the relationship of the natural light and the envirorment with products.

Moving to Madeline Island in 2006, I started experimenting with time exposures and the graphic abstract colors and textures of the surroundings. Shooting often at night or dusk, to allow enough time for the winds of the Island to blur what seems fixed and stable.

Steve studied Fine Arts at Layton School of Art in Milwaukee and photography at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA. He has received numerous awards for his Advertising Photography including a

Golden Lyon at Cannes, France.

Artist Statement:

Lynn has developed a process of image making that utilizes gunpowder as a medium. this work is an extension of her exploration of elemental 'drawing' materials, such as fire, smoke, natural earth pigments and charcoals. She is examining through this process, the primal qualities of mark making in a contemporary context.

The images are a record of an active event, capturing the residual effects released by the burning object. It is a transformative process that explores the alchemic element of fire. The ephemeral images remain as a memory, recording subtle shifts in movement and intensity and are a reflection on our own temporal nature. The use of fire and organic form, in the images, parallel the cycles of renewal and loss.

Lynn received her Masters of Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She is a recipient of a 2007 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and a mentor in the Women's Art Registry of Minnesota Mentor Program.

Artist: Diane Marie, LaPointe, WI

Artist Statement: Diane is a self-taught artist who has been painting since her earliest memories. Her lifelong passion began when she was a toddler, and she discovered a low table covered with National Geographics magazines. There she spent many happy hours, carefully turning the pages and staring at the pictures. As the story goes, her parents were amazed at such careful scrutiny from such a wee tot, and got her a blackboard and some chalk, where she began to try to draw the things she saw in the pictures.

She attended North Hennipen Community College from 1987-89, in the Fine Art and Graphic Design program, with the intention of becoming a professional graphic artist. Though she chose not to pursue that career, and focused on her art in a more hands-on capacity, her art has been featured on several CD covers and other promotional material over the years...

While primarily a painter, Diane is also a sculptor of various mediums, including stone carving and assemblage. She has also worked in mosaic, mobile making, photography, clay and jewelry.
She has been involved in a number of theater productions with the "Lake Effect Players" and "Live Art Puppet Theater" over the years and has done some standup comedy as well. In recent years, she began songwriting and to date has written roughly 25 songs, 5 of which have been recorded.

Gallery hangs first print and the Ice is out at Madeline Island

Well the ice is out and the ferry is running between Bayfield, WI and Madeline Island. That means work has picked up it's pace and we're working on getting the gallery ready for the May 16th opening. The ice flows and small ice bergs are fun to watch as the ferry slips though them and the lake's blue waters (really cold waters) are open.

This is the first print hung in the gallery, I was getting tired of looking at all the bare white walls and just had to put something up...

Here's the freshly primed back to the building that has been prep for painting, this week we're finishing the prep work and hope to be painting next week. Decks get started next week also...

Yes, I do get a few minutes free, drink coffee, lots of coffee and am collecting drift wood for a sculpture I have designed for the front of the gallery.

The new gallery logo has been designed by Beth Ignaut of Minneapolis, she's a great designer and has captured the Island and the name and combined them into a great logo.

Warm weekend means working on the cedar siding

The weather was warm and 30's over the weekend, besides the huge moon with a ring around it, it allow for work to really begin on the outside of the building. The bright red paint was coming off but not without some effort....

New floors for Bell Street Gallery

We've spent the past couple of weeks getting the walls and ceiling painted and we have just finished laying the new pine floor from the local saw mill. We're sealing and varishing it this week and are starting to work on the counters, etc. More to come...

Winter has come to the Island and the Ferry has stopped running so we're cut off till the Ice Road (road over Lake Superior) is open for traffic. We've gotten @ 1 foot of snow and the temp ranged over the holiday between 38 to -10 degrees....

Here's the new sky light, it's covered for the painting process...

The walls have been primed and will get another coat of paint before we install the wood floors and trim. More to come in the middle of Jan when the road is open.

New roof for an old building

Between rain&snow showers Rick and crew have been working on the new gray steel roof, kind of blends into the gray cold Madeline Island fall days.

This week we have had a dramatic change in weather, from 50's to 20's in a week. We've had freezing rain and some snow but at this time it isn't sticking....

Our new double doors arrived and were placed into the new gallery. We are also using paneling matching the old 1" thick wall boards from our local on the Island saw mill.

Our bathroom is framed in and paneled.

This week we have the new roof and sky light going on and are working on permits for our new pottery deck and our front deck for artists working at the gallery this summer.

We have now rough in the restroom and have been insulating the walls and getting the Gallery ready for the winter. Work will continue through the winter on finishing the space while the outside work will have to stop.

Bell Street Gallery goes through a leveling...

So the inside has been stripped to to bones and we're starting to restore and add elements.

This is how much the back of the building had to be raised to make the floor level with the back. Of coarse, it rained while Gary from Grampa Tony's and Chuck Nelson dug and corrected for the years of sinking.

Gabe makes room for a new door with my favorite tool, a chainsaw....

This door will lead to the new deck for pottery and the shed which will be full of "stuff" for kids.

Chuck Nelson had to crawl under the building to jack up the middle of the building.... "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?".

Bell Street Gallery on Madeline Island continues to be demo

Progress this week was a bit slow with issues of getting stuff to the Island. But we've found hard wood floors on half of the gallery floor and pine planks on the other half. The walls are covered with 70 year old pine barn boards most in great shape. We've ordered new beams to run from the top of the walls across the room from a local saw mill. Next week is raising the floor so it's level, the new metal roof and the sky light replacing the old furnace chimney.

Mary and Steve McHugh have started working on their new Art Gallery on Madeline Island, Wisconsin. We closed on the deal to buy our new building on September 25th with the expert assistance of Eric Kodner at Madeline Island Realty. Here's some of the shots of the building from the outside and the demo process on the inside.
